From Kelsey Johnson, 2012 Director of Development

John Dewey, the respected American philospher and education reformer, said "the aim of education should be to teach students rather how to think, than what to think. With this philosophy in mind since its inception in 1958, HOBY has carried out its mission to seek out, recognize and develop leadership potential commencing with high school sophomores, and to encourage and prepare the next generation of civic and corporate leadership for America's future. During annual three- and four-day seminars, HOBY Ambassadors experience lectures from local leaders, participate in workshops to develop civic imagination and critical thinking skills, and engage in community service projects--all designed to prove the incredible power of combined dedication and to empower them to make a positive impact on our global community.

Now 12 years out from my own HOBY experience, I can tell you that the core values of volunteerism, integrity, and excellence have served me immeasurably since that one weekend in 10th grade, and I am not alone in treasuring my seminar:

"HOBY was a truly amazing and unforgettable experience! I gained so much from this conference, including increased passion for success and a great deal of inspiration. HOBY has opened my eyes to endless possibilities and ideas."

- Stephanie Johnson, John A. Ferguson High School (HOBY '10)

HOBY seminars are conducted 100% by volunteers, and we begin planning 8-10 months in advance of each leadership weekend. We rely heavily on donations from the community to provide lodging, meals, t-shirts, and curriculum items for each student. The seminar typically costs about $14,000 to produce each year, and I hope that you will be able to help us reach that funding goal for 2012.

As a former ambassador, as a current donor and volunteer, and as the 2012 Director of Development, I ask you to join me in investing in South Florida's most promising young leaders. Please make a financial contribution, donate a gift-in-kind, or help us raise funds in your community today. Giving is as easy as clicking the button below or mailing a check to the address provided, and your gift will support South Florida's top students in discovering, and utilizing, their potential.

Please consider how you might be able to support South Florida's youth today.
